A Famous Murder And An Acclaimed Cast Bring The Claustrophobic “Sister My Sister” To Its Inevitable Conclusion

June 20, 2017 — Sister My Sister takes place in 1932, in provincial France.

The housemaids barely spoke a word to anyone outside of the house.

The two maids, sisters, were terrorized by their silly, self-absorbed employer, Madame Danzard (Julie Walters), who saw no reason why the two young women should have any life beyond the one of servitude she was giving them. They slept in the same room, in the same bed, and had no outside contact.

Christine (Joely Richardson) takes elaborate care of her beloved younger sister Lea, (Jodhi May). As one another’s exclusive companions, they grow ever closer. Their closeness eventually develops into a sexual relationship.

When the woman of the house threatens the two young women, they take the only way out that they are capable of seeing.

Based on a true story, the one that Jean Genet used for his play The Maids, this is an atmospheric retelling of the murder committed by the Papin sisters. The murder, which had classist undertones, created a sensation in France, and has been the source of numerous plays, books and movies.
