Jim Brannigan (John Wayne) is sent to London to bring back an American mobster who is being held for extradition. When he arrives the mobster has been kidnapped  — a situation which was set up by the mobster’s lawyer, Mel Fields (Mel Ferrer). Fields puts a price on Brannigan’s head to prevent his client from being extradited.

Brannigan, in his American-Irish way, brings American law techniques to the officers of Scotland Yard and makes a large number of enemies, including Commander Swann (Richard Attenborough) an upper crust–type who doesn’t understand Brannigan’s un-restrained attitude toward policing, or his need to carry a gun.
