Celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week with This Touching Doc

October 6, 2017 —
This week is nationally recognized as Mental Health Awareness Week, which is undoubtedly an important topic to bring to light. Throughout the week, people across the country are encouraged to raise awareness of mental health and illness, fight stigma and support education and open discussion regarding mental health issues.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 1 in 4 adults in America suffer from mental illness, from mood disorders like depression and schizophrenia to the most common: anxiety disorder. Thanks to nationwide programs like Mental Health Awareness Week, we can all do our part to get rid of the stigma surrounding mental illness and get people the emotional and medical support they deserve.

FilmRise is proud to support films that bring attention to mental health, one of which is Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Sandra Adair’s The Secret Life of Lance Letscher. The documentary is a deeply personal and psychological portrait of collage artist Lance Letscher, and the inspiring way he battles his demons through his art. Faced with the loss of a family member by suicide, Letscher demonstrates one of many ways to turn tragedy into something meaningful: through creative expression.

The Secret Life of Lance Letscher will be released on iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, and Google Play in November. Make sure to watch the trailer here!
