In “Amnesia,” The Police Investigator Cannot Be Sure That He Is Not A Murderer

March 30, 2017 — Is he responsible for killing his wife? Is she really dead?

Police investigator Mack Stone (John HannahFour Weddings and a Funeral, Sliding Doors and The Mummy franchise) doesn’t know what happened to his wife.  She disappeared 5 years ago; she may simply have walked out, or something more sinister could have happened to her. Stone was so drunk that night that he blacked out, and cannot remember anything that happened.

In the meantime, Stone has an investigation to run. A man who calls himself John Dean showed up 5 years before, claiming that he had no memories of his past. Doctors think Dean has clinical amnesia, but Stone isn’t convinced He thinks that Dean is actually Paul West, a man who has been missing for five years — and who disappeared after his own wife died in a fire. Believing the two men are the same, Stone is not entirely convinced that Dean really has amnesia.

As he investigates the case — to the point of obsession — his behavior becomes questionable,. Eventually, his second wife and his partner, D.I. Ian Reid (Brendan Coyle, Downton Abbey) start having their own doubts about him. The elusive psychology of this flawed protagonist becomes a significant part of this intelligent and intriguing thriller.

Amensia, this 2-part mystery was seen on BBC, and the cast includes Jemma Redgrave, of the Redgrave acting dynasty (Howard’s End), Patrick Malahide (The Alleyn Mysteries, The World Is Not Enough), Anthony Calf (New Tricks, Pride and Prejudice).
