Matthew Shepard Should Not Be Forgotten

May 25, 2017 — The death of Matthew Shepard brought consciousness of LGBT hate crimes to the entire world.

Shepard was a student at Wyoming University when he was given a ride by two men, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. Shepard thought he was being driven home from a bar; instead, the two men took him to remote area where they tied him up, tortured him, pistol-whipped him, fractured his skull and left him while they drove off.

The two killers would be discovered when they attacked two other men and the police searched their truck.

Matthew Shepard would be discovered, still tied to a fence, by a cyclist who originally believed he was a scarecrow. His face was covered in blood, except where tears had washed him clean. He was taken to an area hospital, but his injuries were severe, and he died six days later.

Candlelight vigils were held around the world for him, and his death resulted in new legislation.

The Matthew Shepard Story stars veterans Stockard Channing (who won an Emmy® Award for her performance) and Sam Waterston as the young man’s parents.

This multi-award-winning film was critically acclaimed.
