April 13, 2017 — For more than two decades, the beloved actor David Suchet played the world-famous detective Hercule Poirot for PBS’ Masterpiece Mystery. During those 24 years he played a character who could solve all mysteries.
Now Suchet is attempting to solve a mystery that perhaps even the fussy Belgian detective with the impressive little grey cells would have found challenging. He attempts to understand and explore one of the great mysteries of the Bible: Who was St. Peter, and how did he go from being a simple fisherman to being one of the pillars of the Church and the first Bishop of Rome?
Peter, also known as Simon, was not an early convert — the Bible claims he doubted Jesus until after the Resurrection. In fact, out of fear, he denies Jesus just prior to the Resurrection.
But an unexplained transformation took place after the Resurrection that convinced Peter to devote his life to guiding this new Church and keeping it from splintering apart.
Suchet goes in search of answers about the man of whom Jesus said “…on this rock I will build my church.”
Suchet travels from Galilee to Rome and Jerusalem in hopes of discovering what this curiously fallible and ultimately human Saint was really like.
