“Truman” Is One Of The Most Brilliant Acting Jobs You Will See This Year (Or Any Other)

July 12, 2017 –-Truman  is one of the most-acclaimed movies to come out of Spain and Argentina in decades.

Director Cesc Gay’s deeply moving and beautifully acted film has won 29 awards since its premiere in 2015, including 5 Goya Awards — the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars®. At the 30th Award ceremony, the film was awarded Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.

Julian (Ricardo Darín) is a reasonably successful actor living in Madrid. He gets a surprise visit from Tomas, a childhood friend with whom he has stayed in touch throughout the years. However, they have not seen one another recently — Tomas is a school teacher and he lives in Canada with his wife and children.

Julian is surprised — and a little suspicious of the timing of his friend’s visit.

Julian has terminal cancer and has decided to forego further treatments; he suspects that Tomas has shown up suddenly to try to talk him into continuing treatment. But Tomas is not planning anything. He just wants to spend some time — probably the last time — with his old friend.

The two travel around together, as Julian settles the end-of-life things that he needs to take care of. One of those  things is his dog, Truman. Julian makes the decision to find a new home for his beloved boxer — but not before investigating whether dogs mourn for a departed friend.

Ricardo Darin is one of the greatest stars in Argentina (Chinese Take-Away, the Academy Award®-winning The Secret in Their Eyes), and this is his most recent, highly-acclaimed performance.

“We are pleased to announce that we will be bringing this exceptional, award-winning film stateside,” said FilmRise CEO Danny Fisher. “‘Truman’ is a beautiful exploration into the universal themes of friendship and mortality, and we are confident the film will resonate with American audiences when it hits theaters next year.”

“After the incredible reception we received in my home country of Spain, I am beyond thrilled that FilmRise will be releasing ‘Truman’ in American theaters for a whole new audience to discover,” said director Cesc Gay. “At its core, the film is a testament to the power of friendship in the face of tragedy, something that I believe translates across languages and borders and will continue to move and inspire audiences in America.”

Reviews for this film have been stellar:

The Hollywood Reporter: “Cesc Gay’s film is an intimate, performance-driven take on a friendship nearing its inevitable end.”

Toronto International Film Festival: “With the collaboration of acting greats Darín and Cámara, Gay brings humour and sensitivity to this private and personal story, creating a singular reflection on friendship at the end of life.”

Truman is available to stream on Amazon video.
