March 7, 2017 — You would never want to stay at the Hotel Splendide in real life.
But any movie where you get to watch Daniel Craig (the James Bond franchise, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Some Voices) Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense, Angel in the House, About a Boy, Hey, Hey It’s Esther Blueberger) and Stephen Tompkinson (DCI Banks), is worth the visit.
The Hotel Splendide is a dreary, isolated spa/hotel hat sits on a dreary, isolated island that is cut off from the mainland except for a once-a-month ferry. The original owner, Dame Blanche, who insisted on a health regime of seaweed and eel-type health food and frequent colonics, has just died, but she has insisted that her children, Dezmond (Tompkinson), Ronald (Craig) and Cora (Katrin Cartlidge) continue to run the spa to her specifications. It is no big surprise that the ferry conveys fewer and fewer guests willing to submit to the depressing meals and unusual health routines.
Shortly after Dame Blanche’s death, Kath (Colette), arrives. She had been the sous-chef at the hotel five years before and was Ronald’s girlfriend at the time; her arrival is unexpected and jolts the entire establishment.
